West of Loathing is a comedic turn-based RPG that takes place in a fictionalized version of the American frontier. It draws heavily from Kingdom of Loathing, one of Asymmetric's previous games, even down to the same stick figure aesthetic.

  • By Ty Arthur Before chasing down necromancers and would-be emperors, West Of Loathing has your stick figure cowpoke starting out as a lowly traveler first getting a taste of the adventurer's life in Boring Springs. This prologue segment is deceptive though, as there's a lot more to do than you'd expect.
  • Nine people were arrested Wednesday as authorities raided two poker rooms in Houston during a money laundering investigation, prosecutors said. The raids happened at the Post Oak Poker Club at 1001.

Unused Graphics

Placeholder Graphics
There's a lot of very early placeholder graphics still in the files.

  • Reference sheet for the player character. The filename contains the date 2015/11/19 - almost two years before the game's full release.

  • Extremely early character creation sheet.

  • A cheat sign. According to the data, this would be used in Ghostwood in order to skip the puzzle. It's unknown how to get it to show up, if even possible.

  • An El Vibrato store. Aside from the odd font, the filename states that this would go in Frisco.

  • This is the icon used for a mob's skill. Since the player never controls an enemy mob (aside from the minigame in Fort of Darkness, which have unique icons) this goes unused.

  • This is the default graphic loaded for an NPC that doesn't have a prefab set.

Unused Text

Messages from demo versions.

A character reference for Doc Alice.

A character reference for Pete.

A character reference for Susie.

A character reference for Gary.

A reference for the game's artist.

The message that one gets when they use the unused item military dental device.

The message that one gets when they use the unused item mine paystub.

This message likely had an item associated with it, but whatever it was, it's gone now.

Unused Items

ItemNotesItemNotes

super dynamite (DEBUG)

I'll... have the soup.

This item is used in combat.
For debuggin'.

Throws a stick of dynamite at the enemy that deals a whopping 999 damage. Unsellable.

debug megabadge

We don't need no stinking badges, but just in case...

This item goes on your lapel.
+99 Muscle
+99 Mysticality
+99 Moxie
+99 Maximum AP

Unsellable. The name should be a clear indicator of what it's for.

coupon for [something]

This coupon entitles the bearer to one free //looseend: ONE FREE WHAT
Unsellable. According to the game's data, this item would have been available in the Postal Way Station, but it isn't.

military dental device

This is some sort of weird dental prosthesis, apparently issued by the army.

Inspect it

Unsellable. This item's use script is called 'item_breadcrumb_cemetery4' - presumably, it was meant to be used as a breadcrumb to direct the player to the Military Cemetery. Using it gives an unused message.

mine paystub

This is a paystub from a different mine than the one you found it in -- must be from a miner who got transferred.

Inspect it

Unsellable. The item's use script is called 'item_breadcrumb_mine', so presumably it was meant to direct the player to a mine. Using it indeed clarifies this in an unused message.

mask without eyeholes

This mask should never have made it through quality control at the factory.
Unsellable, but able to be equipped on the head.

Item Looseend/Note Text

Inside the data of the game, some items are tagged to include a small note. These are references for the developers, or ideas for where to put items that don't yet have a purpose.

Areas

Access to these zones can be gained by editing the .JSON save file located here:

...and swapping out the entries in 'location' and 'WAA_ID' to the internal names present in the galleries (keep quotation marks intact.) Change the x,y location to 1,1 to prevent softlocks.

To be completely safe, creation of a new character and/or save file backup is highly recommended. It is entirely possible to cause the character to become completely unusable by mistake!

The Twilight Zone

The Twilight Zone is West of Loathing's main debugging room. On the left side of the room, it has objects that are able to give you one of every item, give you every map location, let you fight any enemy in the game (provided you know the internal encounter name) and a few other miscellaneous options.

On the right side of the room, there is, according to a signboard, a whole bunch of 'random crap' - true to its description, a lot of the objects are for testing or are non-interactable. The most interesting object is a 'Debug Hat' that gives you 99 dynamite, 1 Deputy Pistol, and options to warp to a few different areas.

This map and Cold Storage are the only unused maps that have pointers on the world map.

  • aaa_twilightzone

Cold Storage

Cold Storage, also known as The Freezer, is an area with an unknown purpose. It's labeled as debug on the world map, and contains all four pardners and all four horses. It isn't possible to change your pardner or horse once they're selected.

  • aaa_coldstorage

Photo Studio

This room might have an internal use, it might have had a use in the past, or it might have never had a use whatsoever. The only thing we can be assured of now is that save for a non-interactable Crazy Horse, it's entirely empty.

Upon entering this zone after using the Debug Hat, you're given a Four-Gallon Hat, a Floppy Derby, and a Barely-Enchanted Hat.

  • zzz_photostudio

Trailer Zone

This is the area that the developers recorded parts of the teaser trailer in. There's several non-interactable NPCs, along with a switchbox that changes the animation of the cowboy.

  • aaa_trailerzone

Alamo Rent-A-Mule (Basem*nt)

This is supposedly the basem*nt of the Alamo Rent-A-Mule. The only thing of interest is a single crate that displays a message saying a fight club is (or was) planned. The stairs lead to inside the Alamo Rent-A-Mule.

  • fort7_basem*nt

Silver Plater interior (no longer used)

It seems that the Silver Plater once had a house you could enter. Of course, as the name of this room points out, that idea was scrapped.

The door takes you to right outside the Silver Plater's booth.

  • xxx_silverplater_interior

Bandit Camp 10

Empty, save for your horse and pardner. According to the name, it might have been a planned bandit camp.

  • zzz_bandit10

Circus PH Areas

All of these are placeholder rooms for the Circus. Talking to any of the 'NPCs' gives the same events as the final one does (balloon clown gives balloon clown event, etc.). Half of the arrows don't port you like they should, and the ones that do port you to the finished version.

There are two additional empty placeholder rooms in the game's data called 'Tanning Vats' and 'Liming & Bating.' The circus has no tanning rooms in the final game.

  • zzz_clowns_circus_food

  • zzz_clowns_circus_games

  • zz_clowns_circus_outsideshow

  • zzz_clowns_circus_outsidestage

The Cow Level

Surprisingly, not a Diablo II joke. It's completely empty save for your Pardner and a set of doors. Entering the doors takes you to the Hellstrom Ranch. At one point in time, perhaps it might have been possible to enter the portal present there?

  • zzz_cowlevel

Gibberin' Gulch

The Gibberin' Gulch is an empty gulch. Your pardner and horse are squished in the corner, at 0,0. Considering the internal name, this was probably a planned goblin area.

West Of Loathing Poker Room (2)

Northwestern Goblin Cave

This is an unfinished goblin cave with a few equally unfinished floors. The last one has a few 'goblin houses' in it. It's also worth mentioning that none of the cave doors work correctly, they have 'shadows', and most are horribly misaligned.

Goblinville

This is an unfinished goblin town. Where's the goblin houses?

None of the houses are interactable.

  • zzz_goblin5

President Goblin's Castle

Based on this room and the above few, it seems that the goblins might have had a larger part in the story than they ended up having.

Interacting with the house causes the game to point out that it is, in fact, a goblin castle.

  • zzz_goblin6

Puzzle Mine B

This room is a placeholder for a room in Jumbleneck Mine - the one where you get the paper bag. The lunchbox gives the same items and message as it does in the final room.

  • zzz_mine4_levelb

Old Train Station

Judging by the internal name, this was likely a bandit hiding place. There's three headless bodies standing in front of a house, and a placeholder cart to the right.

This room actually has an unfinished event. Entering the shed gives you a prompt to build an ambush for some bandits. Based on your mysticality, you can set an ambush that varies in effectiveness. Unfortunately, nothing happens afterwards.

  • zzz_oldbandit6

The Perfessor's Cellar

An empty cellar supposedly belonging to the Perfessor, judging by the internal name, the room's name, and the fact that the stairs lead you to right outside the Perfessor's Shack. In the final game, he doesn't have a cellar.

Your pardner spawns here at 0,0 for some reason.

  • zzz_professor_cellar

West Of Loathing Poker Room Set

Riff's Testing Ground

A testing room that has two NPCs. The NPC contains dialogue from a few different events, and the horse starts the event that occurs when you first encounter the Pale Horse.

  • zzz_rifftest

The Desert

The internal name suggests this is just a testing room. There's two invisible objects in the room that the player character can't pass through.

  • zzz_testarea2

Testville

A room containing nothing but two placeholder faces. Interacting with the one on the right makes the player character think to say hello, or something to that effect. It's difficult to discern the intent, is what I'm saying.

  • zzz_testville

Additional Empty Rooms

These rooms do not have an area to walk in, and thus cause either a softlock or a complete crash.

Four live poker rooms are now open in Pennsylvania. The rooms where you can find live poker right now are:

  • The Meadows
  • Mount Airy Casino
  • Mohegan Sun Pocono
  • Rivers Casino Pittsburgh

These five live poker rooms are currently closed:

  • Parx (opening Dec. 15)
  • Hollywood Casino
  • Presque Isle Downs
  • Wind Creek Casino
  • Rivers Casino Philadelphia (reopened but closed again on Nov. 20)

In the New Year, players will also have another live poker option in Philadelphia. Live! Casino and Hotel in Philly will open in early 2021, and a 29-table poker room should open with it, pending COVID-19 restrictions.

West Of Loathing Poker Room (3)

We will continue to update casino and poker room closings and reopening plans in this second wave at our live updates page here.

Parx poker room reopening in mid-December

Pennsylvania’s largest poker room announced a date for its long-awaited return. Parx Poker Room will reopen on Dec. 15 at 9.m. with all of its usual games and be open 24 hours. The news came via Parx’s website.

What’s up at Wind Creek’s poker room?

With 26 tables, Wind Creek Casino has one of the larger poker rooms in PA. A representative from Wind Creek told PlayPennsylvania they had no update on when the poker room would open.

A Wind Creek employee provided an update on some of the happenings at Wind Creek including the poker room. Read the full story here.

PA poker rooms opening one by one

Other poker rooms in Pennsylvania could be reopening any day. According to a spokesperson for the PGCB, casinos submit plans and safety protocols for review. Once they receive final approval from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB), they can reopen.

It’s positive news for poker players who have been waiting a long time to get back to live games. Casinos in Pennsylvania started shutting down to slow the spread of coronavirus in mid-March. They did not begin to welcome back guests until June, and poker rooms were not open due to the social nature of the game.

PlayPennsylvania has contacted poker room reps for Hollywood Casino, Wind Creek Casino, and Presque Isle Downs Casino but they had no concrete plans to share.

We will continue to update you here as more rooms open or set a date for reopening.

Live Poker returned to Rivers Philadelphia but closed again

Rivers Casino Philadelphia reopened its poker room on Oct. 23. It did so with approval for up to 14 tables with a capacity of 100 guests. Under normal circ*mstances, the room has 28 tables and offers a variety of poker games but now the action returned with primarily No Limit Texas Hold’em cash games.

According to a recent press release, in addition to the existing casino-wide safety measures, the following precautions are in effect for the poker room (when it is open):

  • Masks must be worn at all times
  • Poker dealers will wear both a mask and a face shield
  • Each poker table in play will have plexiglass dividers, separating players and the dealer
  • A maximum of seven players allowed per table
  • Frequent and thorough cleaning of all cards, chips and surfaces
  • Only sanitized chips bought from the poker room cage will be used in play
  • No food, beverage or smoking is permitted in the poker room or anywhere on the Rivers Casino gaming floor

Peter Longi, assistant general manager at Rivers Casino Philadelphia, commented:

“Poker players are excited to be back at the tables, enjoying the game they love. Our reopening was carefully planned with the safety of our team and guests being the primary concern. We’re eager to welcome back our poker team.”

To assist with social distancing, players are encouraged to call the poker room at 215-717-3883 to put their name on the waiting list when the room reopens. Guests can also check the Bravo Poker Live online or the website’s mobile app for the Rivers Casino poker room up-to-the-minute game status. In addition, players will have a chance to win their share of the $100,000 Bad Beat Jackpot. The minimum qualifying hand is quad 2s.

Rivers had to close its poker room once again along with the rest of the casino until at least Jan. 1, 2021.

Here’s a look at a poker table at Rivers Philadelphia:

Players pine for poker

When the PGCB released its casino reopening protocols in late May, part of them stated that poker rooms were not authorized to operate due to players’ handling of cards and chips. They also said poker room operations would be re-examined based on changes in the CDC’s and PA Department of Health’s guidance.

On June 9, Rivers Casino Pittsburgh was the first to welcome back visitors. When asked when poker rooms would return, PGCB Director of Communication Doug Harbach said poker rooms present a different type of challenge since people are sitting close together in a room. He said at the time:

“The casinos want to walk before they run and make sure they are getting the venue open and then move on to opening up other areas once they know the protocols are working well.”

PokerStars, the state’s lone online poker site, has posted healthy numbers in PA, but players are still pining for in-person play.

Harbach gave this update to PlayPennsylvania in late August about poker rooms in Pennsylvania:

“There has been no alteration to the casino reopening protocols released by the Gaming Control Board in May in which poker rooms were not authorized to operate. At the same time, this guideline can be reexamined based on health experts’ guidance. Should casinos wish to explore reopening a casino room, it would need to provide plans to do so safely, which would be reviewed by the board on a case-by-case basis.”

Poker is back in New Jersey, too

New Jersey also had a long poker pause. The Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa reopened its poker room, the largest in the state, on Oct. 21. The room is operating with 30 socially distanced tables. It’s about a third of the room’s 85 tables when operating at full capacity.

The Bellagio in Las Vegas opened its poker room in June. Nevada state guidelines mandated five-handed play in rooms without dividers or plexiglass partitions. However, the Bellagio’s request for six-handed poker games with partitions was approved by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

Other poker rooms in Nevada have also reopened with virus protocols in place.

When will poker rooms in Pennsylvania reopen?

Play Pennsylvania will continue to provide updates here as more casinos announce plans and reopen live poker.

Lady Luck Nemacolin and Valley Forge do not have poker rooms. PlayPennsylvania exclusively reported that Harrah’s Philadelphia closed its WSOP-branded room in August.

More online poker operators coming to PA

PokerStars arrived in Pennsylvania in November 2019 and has been the state’s only operator for 11 months. Partypoker was rumored to be coming in the early fall, but like most party plans in 2020, it hasn’t happened.

Last week, the PGCB approved Caesars‘ online poker partner 888 Holdings for an interactive gaming manufacturer license. 888 Poker was the No. 1 poker website in the country last year. It has a self-branded poker platform, and its software powers World Series of Poker (WSOP) online and mobile sites.

It seems only a matter of time before both partypoker and WSOP.com make their way to PA.

Health and safety at PA casinos

Here are a few things you should know in case you have not been to a casino since they reopened. Per the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, all casinos in the state must follow the COVID-19 Casino Reopening Protocols, which detail the minimum safety and health-related requirements that are mandatory before reopening.

Casinos may also choose to have additional measures, such as temperature checks at the entrance.

Key points to remember are:

  • Casinos can reopen at 50% capacity. (Rivers Casino Philadelphia is open at 25%.)
  • Employees and guests must wear masks.
  • There must be markings on the floor to promote social distancing.
  • Enhanced cleaning is required throughout the facility.

In addition, there is a current pause on smoking at casinos, no drink service on the gaming floor and no sitting at the bar.

Be sure to check back often as we continue to post updates on PA poker room reopenings here.
