Review | Star Wars Outlaws: Wild Card DLC (PS5) (2024)

When Star Wars Outlaws launched back in August, it turned heads as the first open world Star Wars game, but opinions were mixed about its execution. Fast forward a few months, and Wild Card is here to shuffle the deck with a DLC that dives into high stakes sabacc, thrilling chases, and some fantastic character moments.

While it doesn’t play every hand perfectly, I absolutely loved it. This new chapter for Kay Vess is packed with intrigue, action, and just enough of that galaxy-far-far-away magic to entice players back.

Wild Card takes Kay to a luxurious cruise liner in deep space, where she’s trying to win the tournament’s grand prize. Why? Because someone from her past is blackmailing her, and losing isn’t an option. But before you even sit at a sabacc table, you’ll need to find the location of the tournament and hustle your way into the competition.

Hyperspace Yacht

Stepping onto the luxurious space yacht is as cool as it sounds. There’s hyperspace travel, fancy decor, and even your own room — complete with gear upgrades for Kay and a shiny new coat for Nix. But while the setting is stunning, it’s not perfect. The main casino area, for instance, feels more like a waiting room than a party hub. NPCs just stand around, a band plays atop the bar, while Kay sprints through the room like she’s late for a meeting. Immersion? Not quite there.

Still, the real fun begins when you start investigating the competition. You can dig up dirt on your fellow players, expose cheaters, or even set them up by planting cards and letting droids bust them. One guy had a suspiciously nervous cough, and calling him out got him dragged out in style. It’s a clever mix of strategy and sabotage that makes the sabacc section stand out — if only there was more of it!

Pew-pew!

Of course, it wouldn’t be Star Wars without some good ol’ blaster action.

After the Wild Cards are dealt, things escalate into a fantastic chase sequence that’s as cinematic as it is heart pounding. The DLC also takes you back to Toshara for a few side missions, though these felt a bit like reheated leftovers — been there, looted that.

Thankfully, the new area of Mirogana makes up for it. Dodging Imperials, sneaking through enemy territory, and teaming up with Lando? Yes, please.. Lando’s as smooth as ever, though I was hoping for a few more laugh-out-loud moments from him. Still, his partnership with Kay adds a fun dynamic, and their banter is spot on.

Upgraded Gameplay

The Wild Card DLC dropped alongside a sweet update to the base game, and the improvements are a game changer. You can now swap the shoulder cam during combat, making firefights way more tactical. Sneaking through cartel bases is also better — you can take your time and deal with enemies without getting booted for minor alarm triggers. But my favourite update is now you don’t drop special weapons every time you climb a ledge or ladder — or even get on your speeder; Kay holds onto her weapon while traversing.

In Wild Card, these updates shine during the more intense moments. Whether you’re running from danger or blasting your way through, it all feels smoother and more engaging than before. There’s a long list of updates and it’s worth reading through them. Massive Entertainment is taking player feedback on board.

Worth the Gamble?

For around $20, Wild Card is a solid few hours of fun. The sabacc tournament is clever, the action is great, and Lando’s here to steal the show (almost). Sure, I would’ve loved a brand new planet or a livelier cruise ship, but the DLC still delivers where it counts.

If you’re itching for more Kay Vess and Nix adventures, this one’s worth the chips.
