Jewish New Yorkers react to a ‘mandate of change’ in NYC under Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s leadership

A day after the NYC Mayor’s Race was decided, much of the Jewish community and its supporters in New York City are reacting to Zohran Mamdani’s victory with a mix of disappointment, concern, and cautious hope. Many hope that the newly elected Democratic socialist will not turn a blind eye to the rise of antisemitism that has proliferated throughout the city in recent years.

From rabbis and educators to parents and advocacy groups, Jewish New Yorkers expressed nervousness about a Mamdani win throughout 2025. Much of their fear stems from his outspoken support of Palestine and his criticisms of Israel during the recent conflict with Hamas in Gaza.

This deadly conflict began on October 7, 2023, when terrorists stormed Israel, killing more than 1,200 men, women, and children, and taking others hostage. In light of these events, the Jewish community remains watchful and hopeful that the new mayor will address concerns about antisemitism in NYC while navigating complex international and local issues.
