Kyle Shanahan said on Sunday that Brock Purdy’s turf toe is a lingering concern and could continue to bother the 49ers quarterback for the rest of the 2025 campaign. The coach explained that the team is figuring out how to balance Purdy’s recovery with the need for stability at the quarterback position.
Purdy has missed seven games since injuring his right big toe in Week 1. He attempted to return in Week 4 against Jacksonville, but the injury flared up again, forcing him to sit out additional games. After San Francisco’s 34-24 victory over the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, Shanahan provided an update about evaluating Purdy’s readiness to return.
“Anytime you’re dealing with turf toe, it’s something that probably won’t fully go away all year,” Shanahan said. “Regardless of when he comes back, he’ll have to deal with it a little bit. It’s just assessing when’s the best time to come back and have to deal with it the least. It’s a little bit of a tricky decision.”
Shanahan also mentioned that the medical staff has not recommended offseason surgery for the injury. Purdy has been practicing on a limited basis for three weeks, occasionally working with the first-team offense but remaining cautious with his workload.
Regarding Purdy’s inactivity against the Giants, Shanahan made it clear the quarterback was never close to playing. The coaching staff wanted to avoid rushing his recovery like they did earlier in the season.
“I just want to make sure he gets 100% better and won’t put him out there too early,” Shanahan told ESPN. “[We] thought about it as a possible backup or emergency, but I think the more time we get the better.”
In Purdy’s absence, Mac Jones has stabilized the 49ers offense. The veteran quarterback completed 19 of 24 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns against New York. Impressively, he started the game 14-for-14 in the first half. His passer rating of 135.2 helped San Francisco secure its sixth win of the season and its fifth victory in his seven starts.
