How to Farm Luminous Oil in Final Fantasy XIV
Luminous Oil is a fairly useful currency in Final Fantasy XIV, primarily used to acquire a couple of unique items found within the Pilgrim’s Traverse Deep Dungeon. Fortunately, this is a currency you won’t need to farm endlessly, as it only serves two main purposes. Both of these items are cute and worth adding to your collection, but the game doesn’t clearly explain how to accumulate the 99 Luminous Oil needed for the hairstyle reward. The downside is that while it’s possible to farm Luminous Oil, it may take some time.
What is Luminous Oil Used For?
Luminous Oil can be exchanged for two items in Final Fantasy XIV:
- Sin Beaver (Minion): 25 Luminous Oil
- Modern Aesthetics Simple and Clean (Hairstyle): 99 Luminous Oil
How to Acquire Luminous Oil Easily
To start accumulating Luminous Oil, you first need to unlock Pilgrim’s Traverse. Simply unlocking it will reward you with 1x Luminous Oil. This is one of the rewards for completing the unlock quest Pilgrimage of Light, which begins in The Crystarium.
Requirements to unlock Pilgrim’s Traverse:
- Be at least level 91 on a combat job
- Complete Floor 50 of the Palace of the Dead
If you meet these requirements, head to the coordinates 10.3, 10.7 in The Crystarium and speak to the Bright-eyed Child to start the quest.
Farming Luminous Oil Efficiently
While unlocking the dungeon gives you an initial Luminous Oil, farming it from there on requires more effort. Here are the best methods to farm Luminous Oil:
1. Weekly Challenge Log for Deep Dungeon
The easiest and most reliable way to farm Luminous Oil is by completing your Weekly Challenge Log objectives tied to Deep Dungeon. These tasks involve completing floors 20, 50, and 100 each week. Finishing these will reward you with Luminous Oil.
Note: You can only complete these weekly challenges once per week, so time is a factor.
2. Trading Ilumed Invocations for Luminous Oil
Completing Floor 100 of Pilgrim’s Traverse can reward you with Ilumed Invocations. You can trade 2 Ilumed Invocations for 1 Luminous Oil by speaking to Ose Wyd at the Pilgrim’s Traverse entrance.
3. Loot from Sacks in Pilgrim’s Traverse
There are reports that some sacks dropped within Pilgrim’s Traverse may contain Luminous Oil, though this is rare and not consistently confirmed.
Recommended Farming Strategy
The most time-efficient route is to complete Floors 20, 50, and 100 each week to claim your Challenge Log rewards. This steady progression will gradually build your Luminous Oil supply. Plus, taking on Floor 100 can help you earn Ilumed Invocations to convert into more Luminous Oil, further accelerating your farming.
Is It Worth It?
If you’re aiming for the Modern Aesthetics Simple and Clean hairstyle that costs 99 Luminous Oil, be prepared to invest some time, as it can take a while to reach that amount. However, the hairstyle is highly valuable on the market, selling for around 23 million gil on servers like Diabolos, making it a worthwhile investment for those interested in gil-making.
On the other hand, if you just want the Sin Beaver minion, which only costs 25 Luminous Oil, you can obtain it much more quickly.
Farming Pilgrim’s Traverse is also rewarding beyond Luminous Oil, as you can acquire beautiful Stained Glass Weapons as well.
