South Carolina fell to 3-6 on the season after a 30-14 loss to Ole Miss. Just a week after nearly upsetting Alabama, the team struggled significantly, leading the program to decide it was time for a change in the coaching staff.
South Carolina has officially parted ways with offensive coordinator Mike Shula, according to Matt Zenitz of CBSSports. Shula was in his first year as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for South Carolina, having previously served as a senior offensive assistant for the team earlier in 2024.
The decision to terminate Shula should not come as a surprise. After starting the season 2-0, South Carolina has lost six of their last seven games. The offense has particularly struggled, scoring 14 or fewer points in four of those seven games, including the recent loss to Ole Miss.
Currently, South Carolina is averaging just 17.4 points per game against FBS opponents, ranking them 123rd in the nation. The team also ranks 125th in the country in total yards per game. Breaking it down further, their run attack is ranked 124th nationally, while their passing game sits at 95th.
Quarterback LaNorris Sellers, whom Shula was supposed to help develop, has unfortunately regressed this season. Sellers has passed for only 1,536 yards with seven touchdowns, thrown five interceptions, and been sacked 33 times. This past week proved particularly tough for Sellers, as he completed 16 of 30 passes for 180 yards and one touchdown. While he did run for a touchdown, he also threw two interceptions and was sacked six times.
Fans have been demanding this change for some time. During the game against Oklahoma, chants of “fire Shula” echoed throughout the stadium. Now, their wish has been granted.
Shula’s lack of success is not unusual in his coaching career. He served as the head coach for Alabama from 2003 to 2006 before being fired. Since then, he has bounced around the NFL, holding positions with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers, New York Giants, Denver Broncos, and Buffalo Bills prior to joining the South Carolina staff.
As the Gamecocks look ahead, they will need to regroup and find a new offensive direction to salvage their season.
