Dr. Mehmet Oz, the Trump administration’s Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), oversees the vast federal health care program that provides coverage for more than a third of Americans. Recently, Dr. Oz shared alarming information regarding corruption within CMS that has allowed millions of illegal immigrants to receive benefits intended for U.S. citizens.
At least 14 states (pictured below) provide Medicare benefits to undocumented immigrants. Dr. Oz revealed findings from initial audits that demonstrate significant misuse of federal funds:
> “Based on our initial set of audits, more than $1 billion of federal taxpayer dollars were being spent on funding Medicaid for illegal immigrants. And my team is getting it back. Some want to deny that illegal immigrants are receiving Medicaid. Others insist it’s illegal for Medicaid to cover illegal immigrants. And others accurately point out that hospitals can provide emergency services to illegal immigrants under the program. We can all agree on this: rooting out fraud, waste, and abuse is essential to protecting this program for the most vulnerable. It’s also one of the Trump Administration’s top priorities.”
Dr. Oz then laid out the facts regarding federal law and Medicaid funding:
Federal law prohibits the use of federal Medicaid dollars to cover illegal immigrants, except for emergency medical treatment, which states can provide regardless of immigration status. States are allowed to use their own state tax dollars to build Medicaid programs for undocumented immigrants, but they may not use federal funds for this purpose.
Despite these legal boundaries, Dr. Oz accused some states—primarily led by Democrats—of violating federal law by using federal Medicaid dollars for illegal immigrants outside of emergency care. Earlier this year, the CMS auditing team began reviewing state Medicaid programs to ensure compliance.
The preliminary audit of six states uncovered improper use of federal tax dollars in these allegedly state-funded programs, including coverage for individuals with criminal records involving murder and assault. The affected states and the amounts identified are as follows:
– California: $1,310,032,549
– District of Columbia: $2,114,628
– Illinois: $29,778,645
– Washington: $2,367,194
– Colorado: $1,506,743
– Oregon: $5,404,368
Following notification from CMS, many of these states have begun refunding the misspent funds. However, Dr. Oz warns of the implications if these audits had never taken place:
> “Whether willful or not, the states’ conduct highlights a terrifying reality: American taxpayers have been footing the bill for illegal immigrants’ Medicaid coverage, despite many Democrats and the media insisting otherwise.”
Rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse in Medicaid remains a critical priority for the administration to protect resources for those who truly need them.
