FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Cleveland Browns defensive lineman Myles Garrett broke his own franchise record with five sacks against the New England Patriots on Sunday.
By the midpoint of the fourth quarter, Garrett had brought down Patriots quarterback Drake Maye for a total loss of 33 yards, while New England held a 32-13 lead over the Browns.
Garrett’s previous record was 4½ sacks, set against the Chicago Bears in 2021. This time, he capitalized on the Patriots’ first-round draft pick Will Campbell, who entered the game having allowed a team-high 27 pressures over 253 pass blocks this season.
Garrett himself entered Sunday’s matchup with 13 quick pressures — defined as pressures allowed in under 2.5 seconds — which ranked tied for fifth most in the NFL.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Texas A&M, Garrett is a four-time All-Pro and was named the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year.
After the Browns won just three games last season, Garrett, a 6-foot-4, 272-pound defensive end, requested a trade. However, he ultimately signed a four-year, $204.8 million contract extension with the team.
Despite the new deal, Garrett has openly expressed frustration with the Browns’ direction, describing himself as “embarrassed” and “frustrated as hell.”
