**Assam Police DSP Sandipan Garg Arrested in Connection with Singer’s Death in Singapore**
Sandipan Garg, cousin of singer Zubeen Garg and a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Assam, was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the singer’s death in Singapore last month, a senior officer confirmed.
The Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) of Kamrup Metropolitan district has remanded DSP Sandipan Garg to seven-day police custody, the officer added.
According to the Assam Police, the case has been registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including murder, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and causing death by negligence.
The singer tragically drowned while swimming in the sea in Singapore on September 19. Sandipan Garg was reportedly present with him on a yacht when the incident occurred.
“We have arrested Sandipan Garg. Now, we are completing the necessary legal formalities,” said CID Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta.
A special investigation team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam Police is currently probing the singer’s death. This marks the fifth arrest related to the case.
Earlier, key individuals including North East India Festival chief organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, the singer’s manager Siddharth Sharma, and two of his band members — Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amrit Prabha Mahanta — were also apprehended.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, another senior officer mentioned that Sandipan Garg is likely to be placed under suspension since the court has sent him to police custody.
The Assam CID continues to investigate the case following the registration of more than 60 FIRs across the state against Shyamkanu Mahanta and 10 others, including the singer’s manager and band members.
In addition, Assam Police will issue fresh summons to 10 individuals associated with the Assam Association Singapore for failing to appear before the investigating agency within the stipulated deadline, a senior officer revealed on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, two personal security officers (PSOs) of Zubeen Garg have been suspended after financial irregularities were detected in their bank accounts. According to officials, transactions totaling over Rs 1.1 crore were found — Rs 70 lakh in one account and Rs 45 lakh in the other.
“We found financial irregularities in their bank accounts,” the senior official added.
