Denver Broncos do something they had done just once in 113 tries in shocking win over Eagles

For three quarters, the Denver Broncos looked stagnant and confused against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 5. They had held their own for much of the game, but things were slipping away as they trailed 17-3 entering the fourth quarter. That was a bad omen for the Broncos, as they held a record of 1-112 in games in which they trailed by 14 or more points entering the fourth quarter across their entire team history.

But the team turned it on in the fourth quarter, putting together two scoring drives to come within one point of the defending Super Bowl champions. With 7:36 remaining in the game and trailing 17-16 following a touchdown, Broncos head coach Sean Payton made a surprising decision to go for a two-point conversion. That decision paid off as Bo Nix connected with Troy Franklin to convert the two-point play and put the Broncos ahead to stay.

The Broncos then tacked on a field goal with a little over one minute to play to take a 21-17 lead. From there, they had to hold on for the win. The Eagles pushed the ball down the field and got into position to throw one into the end zone on the game’s final play. The pass nearly connected, but Pat Surtain II knocked the ball out of the hands of Devonta Smith, preserving the shocking upset.

With the win, the Broncos improve to 3-2 on the season while handing the Eagles their first defeat of the season and their first home loss since Week 2 of last year.
