Substitute Vermont teacher accused of teaching while high on cocaine

A substitute teacher in Vermont has been accused of showing up to work high on cocaine. One mother shared that her son came home upset, describing the teacher’s behavior as “clearly on drugs” and “acting crazy,” to use his exact words.

At one point during class, the teacher ran out of the room, and the concerned student followed her. According to the mother, Brittany, her son said, “He followed her and I guess found her, and she said to him, ‘Hey, Teddy, why are you off your leash?’” When her son responded with confusion, she added, “Yeah, Teddy, get back inside.” It later became clear that “Teddy” was actually the name of the teacher’s dog.

The student’s concerns prompted the school to contact the police. When officers arrived, they reportedly found cocaine on the teacher’s jacket and backpack.

“We have cited her for possession of cocaine and reckless endangerment based on the fact that she was under the influence while she was in control of the students in her classroom,” said Barre Town Police Chief William Doge.

While the school has reassured parents that students are safe, many are demanding stronger guarantees about the responsibility and safety of those who supervise their children.

“Where was the vetting? Why is there no drug testing? Why are we not following up to make sure these adults who are around our children are safe? The utmost priority should be our children’s safety,” Brittany emphasized.

The school community continues to seek answers and measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
