Technology readiness levels (TRLs) are a valuable tool for tracking funding in the EU’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme. However, a recent report published by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation highlights the need for more guidance to help project officers make accurate assessments.
According to the report, project officers generally consider TRLs to be a good measure of technological advancement. Despite this, they face challenges in verifying TRL levels due to limited resources, tools, and expertise.
The nine-point TRL scale, first developed by NASA in the 1970s, provides a standardized framework for assessing the maturity of technologies. By providing a clear and consistent method for evaluation, TRLs help streamline the funding process and support effective decision-making in research and innovation projects across the EU.
