**Tragic Drowning of Young Man at Kalakund River in Mhow**
Mhow (Madhya Pradesh): A weekend outing turned into a heartbreaking tragedy when Rahul Khan, a young man from Indore’s Saifi Nagar locality, drowned while bathing in the swollen river near Kalakund Railway Station. The incident occurred earlier today, leaving his three companions in shock and prompting a swift response from local authorities.
According to eyewitnesses and villagers, Rahul, who had arrived in Indore from Ahmedabad just the previous day, had set out on a bike ride with four friends for a leisurely trip to Kalakund, a popular scenic spot in Mhow Tehsil.
The group reached the riverbank behind Kalakund Railway Station around midday. While the others stayed on the shore, Rahul ventured into the water for a quick dip. Unfortunately, strong undercurrents—likely worsened by recent rains—pulled him under within minutes.
“We heard his cries and rushed in, but the current was too fierce,” one of Rahul’s distraught friends told villagers who arrived shortly after the incident.
Local villagers quickly mobilised upon hearing the commotion. Fishermen and residents from nearby areas formed a human chain and used ropes in a desperate attempt to rescue him. After nearly 45 minutes of frantic efforts, Rahul’s body was recovered from a depth of about 10-12 feet.
The fire brigade from Mhow and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams were summoned but arrived too late to save him. The body was rushed to the Civil Hospital in Mhow for an autopsy, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Police reports indicate that Rahul had recently returned from a work trip in Ahmedabad and had chosen this impromptu outing with his friends. Initial investigations suggest the drowning was accidental, caused by misjudging the river’s depth and strong currents. No foul play is suspected at this stage.
This tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers hidden in natural water bodies, especially during the monsoon season. Authorities urge the public to exercise caution when visiting rivers and other water sites.
