Ravens put 2 starting defensive linemen on IR

The Baltimore Ravens have placed defensive tackles Nnamdi Madubuike (neck) and Broderick Washington (knee) on injured reserve ahead of their Week 4 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. Both players will be sidelined for at least four games, forcing the team to rely heavily on their defensive line depth over the coming month.

To address these losses, the Ravens signed Brent Urban to the active roster on Saturday as a corresponding move. Additionally, C.J. Okoye and Josh Tupou were elevated from the practice squad for Sunday’s game in Kansas City.

Madubuike’s absence will be particularly challenging for Baltimore, as shown in last week’s loss to the Detroit Lions. His impact on the field is difficult to replicate unless another player significantly steps up their performance. Without Madubuike, opposing offenses can freely double-team Travis Jones and put pressure on the Ravens’ other defenders to make plays. Unfortunately, against strong offenses in Weeks 1 and 3, Baltimore’s defense struggled to rise to the occasion.

While losing Washington is a blow to the team’s depth, his performance this season had yet to meet expectations. The sixth-year defensive tackle has not produced at the level the Ravens anticipated when they signed him to a three-year extension in 2023. According to Pro Football Focus, Washington’s grades have sharply declined; this year, he ranks with a 27.7 run defense grade and a 30.4 overall grade—both the lowest among NFL defensive linemen with a minimum of 40 snaps.

The Ravens will need to find a replacement for Washington’s snaps moving forward, and it’s possible that his substitute could perform better. The long-term outlook for both injured players remains uncertain.

Head coach John Harbaugh has been tight-lipped regarding the specifics of Madubuike’s neck injury, but it’s clear the team is concerned about his future. He will likely miss more than the minimum four games on injured reserve.

Harbaugh offered a more optimistic update on Washington earlier in the week, but subsequent evaluations revealed a more serious issue than initially thought. With the Ravens scheduled for a Week 7 bye, Washington’s four-game IR stint will keep him out through at least Week 8. Ideally, he can return to practice as soon as eligible and be ready to suit up by Week 9. Even better would be a comeback with improved on-field performance.

The Ravens now face the challenge of navigating these injuries while maintaining defensive effectiveness as they continue their season.
