Microsoft has officially confirmed a new initiative called the Windows AI Labs program, aimed at testing experimental artificial intelligence (AI) features on its Windows operating system. This move highlights the company’s ongoing commitment to integrating AI technologies into its software ecosystem.
The Windows AI Labs program was first noticed by Windows testers, who found references to it in pre-release updates for Microsoft Paint last week. According to Mike Harsh, Partner Director of Product Management at Microsoft, the program serves as “a pilot acceleration program for validating novel AI feature ideas in Windows.”
The primary goal of Windows AI Labs is to provide users with an early look at new AI-powered features and gather quick feedback on their usability and overall interest. This approach allows Microsoft to refine innovations based on real customer input before wider release.
While specific features for testing under this program have not yet been fully detailed, Microsoft has steadily introduced AI capabilities across several applications. These include free AI tools for Notepad, image generation features in Paint, and AI-driven actions within File Explorer. Additionally, Paint has recently gained Photoshop-like enhancements such as support for transparency and layers.
With the Windows AI Labs program, Microsoft aims to accelerate its AI integration into Windows, ensuring features are both useful and user-friendly before becoming mainstream parts of the operating system.
