Mumbai: Sheena Bora’s childhood friend on Thursday told the court that Sheena’s mother, Indrani Mukerjea, was against her relationship with Rahul Mukerjea. She went on to say that the relationship between Sheena and Indrani was not cordial, referring to several emails exchanged between her and Sheena.
**Prosecution Examines Sanjana Phukan**
The prosecution on Thursday examined Sanjana Phukan, a childhood friend of Sheena from Guwahati, as witness number 136. Phukan told the court that she was in regular touch with Sheena and that there had not been any period where they went out of touch for more than 15 days.
**Communication Through Calls, Messages, and Emails**
Phukan revealed that she and Sheena communicated regularly through calls, messages, and emails. She referred to a few of the mails shared by Sheena as evidence.
Phukan claimed that the relationship between Sheena and Indrani was strained, partly because Indrani was not present during their upbringing.
**Emails Indicate Difficulties with Mother and Career**
Referring to an email she received from Sheena in June 2009, Phukan said Sheena described “difficult ties with her mother.” According to the email, Indrani had allegedly tried to get Sheena out of her job and even stopped her salary. However, Sheena claimed to have fought hard and managed to keep her job. Sheena wrote that her mother’s plan backfired and that she was now settled.
This particular mail was written by Sheena in response to Phukan’s question about her plans to move in with Rahul, amid Phukan’s safety concerns.
**Sheena and Rahul’s Relationship Described**
Phukan also mentioned an email from October 2009, where Sheena said that Rahul was not in touch with his father and similarly, she was not in contact with Rahul’s mother. Sheena added that they were happy with their situation.
**Emails Reveal Frustration and Desire for Distance**
Phukan shared that in one of Sheena’s emails, she expressed being “fed up with the problems and dramas” surrounding her life and mentioned wanting to take ‘sansyas’ (a term indicating a desire for renunciation or escape).
In another mail related to Diwali, Sheena told Phukan that she was “not in touch with Indrani and she is not going to change, nor does she want to be back in touch with her.”
**Sheena’s Visit to Friend’s Wedding and Future Plans**
In November 2011, Sheena had attended Phukan’s wedding in Guwahati. During the week Sheena stayed with her, Phukan told the court that Sheena expressed happiness with Rahul and mentioned the possibility of marrying him the following year.
**Last Communication Before Disappearance**
Phukan claimed the last time she heard from Sheena was on April 15, 2012. After that, she received a message from Sheena’s phone on April 24 or 25 stating that she was breaking up with Rahul, planning to change her phone number, and asked Phukan not to share the new number with Rahul. She also mentioned that she would be going off social media for some time.
Upon receiving this message, Phukan immediately called Sheena, but the call was disconnected and then Sheena’s phone was switched off.
**Visit to Sheena’s House in Guwahati**
In July 2012, Phukan along with her husband and a friend visited Sheena’s house in Guwahati, where they met Sheena’s grandmother and brother Mikhail.
Phukan told the court, “Mikhail said that Sheena was fine and that she was in the US. When I asked why she was not communicating, Mikhail said she would contact me once she settled down. He showed me some documents on his laptop—a rent agreement for the place where she was staying—and said Sheena asked him to get it revoked.”
