BEVERLY HILLS, Calif — Nearly all of the 230 people nominated for Oscars across 24 categories gathered Tuesday for the Academy Award nominees luncheon, an event that serves as a celebration, group portrait session, and orientation ahead of next month’s big ceremony.
Nominees including Jessie Buckley, Timothée Chalamet, Michael B. Jordan, Ryan Coogler, and Emma Stone sat down for lunch and posed for a class photo alongside contenders for awards ranging from Best Animated Short to the newly created Casting Oscar.
The luncheon is a relatively egalitarian affair where big names mingle with emerging talent, and veteran nominees stand for photos alongside first-timers. Lynette Howell Taylor, elected in July as president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, made her first address to the Oscar nominees, offering guidance on handling acceptance speeches if they win.
“Be prepared,” she advised. “Don’t say you didn’t expect it. You have a one in five chance of winning.” She encouraged winners to make their speeches heartfelt, avoid thanking everyone they can think of, select one person to represent a group of victors, and keep speeches to 45 seconds.
The highlight of the gathering was the roll call, during which every nominee present in a ballroom at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, was summoned to the stage. The atmosphere resembled that of a high school graduation, complete with certificates resembling diplomas handed out to nominees as they departed.
“Woo-hoo!” exclaimed Best Supporting Actress nominee Elle Fanning upon receiving her certificate, even asking for a photo with it.
This year’s roll call was read by actor and Academy Board of Governors member Lou Diamond Phillips. It began with Delroy Lindo, nominated for Best Supporting Actor for the most-nominated film ever, *Sinners*, and concluded with Teyana Taylor, up for Best Supporting Actress for its biggest competitor, *One Battle After Another*.
