Source of chemical smell reported in Chicago area is unknown, fire officials say

CHICAGO (WLS) – Residents across the Chicago area have been reporting a chemical smell in the air since late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, officials say. However, the source of the odor is still unknown.

The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District has received multiple 911 calls describing the smell as chemical or like burning electrical wires. The reports cover a wide area, stretching from central Illinois through Indiana and reaching as far north as the Wisconsin border.

Fire officials noted that the source of the odor appears to be located “quite south” of the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills area, but the exact origin has not yet been determined.

The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District is actively monitoring the situation. They are coordinating with regional partners and other agencies to gather more information.

Officials advise anyone experiencing symptoms such as difficulty breathing, dizziness, nausea, or irritation to seek medical attention promptly. They also remind the public to call 911 only for immediate emergencies or life-threatening situations.
