The FBI has arrested an individual attempting to pose as someone involved in the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Savannah Guthrie. The 84-year-old Nancy has been missing since February 1, after being kidnapped from her home in Arizona.
During a press conference on Thursday, February 5, FBI Phoenix Special Agent in Charge Heith Janke provided an update on the case. “We have made one arrest related to an imposter ransom demand, and a complaint will be presented to a magistrate judge later today,” Janke said. He added, “You will get more on that from the FBI and our U.S. Attorney’s office here in Arizona when it becomes available.”
Janke emphasized that there is no evidence linking this arrested individual to Nancy Guthrie’s kidnapping. “It was someone that was trying to profit off it,” he explained. He also noted that any decisions regarding a possible ransom demand would be made by the Guthrie family.
Addressing others who might try to exploit the situation, Janke delivered a stern warning: “My next message is to those imposters who are trying to take advantage and profit from this situation. We will investigate and ensure you are held accountable for your actions. This is an 84-year-old grandma that needs vital medication for her well-being. You still have the time to do the right thing before this becomes a worse, much worse scenario for you.”
During the press conference, authorities also shared their hope that Nancy Guthrie is still alive. “We believe Nancy is still out there,” Janke said. Despite ongoing efforts, no suspects have been identified so far. “We want her home,” he added. “I really want you to know, this entire team here, those behind me, and our community, are hurting with you.”
Janke further addressed rumors about suspects, stating, “I know there’s been a lot out there about suspects and I want to be very clear: at this time, we have not identified a suspect or a person of interest in this case. We’re not there yet.”
Additionally, TMZ reported that a ransom note was sent to them and has been forwarded to the police for investigation.
The search for Nancy Guthrie continues as law enforcement urges anyone with information to come forward.
