Warren County’s private school students are heading back to class on Wednesday, while public school students will get one more day off.
Officials at Vicksburg Catholic School and Porter’s Chapel Academy confirmed that both private schools will open as scheduled Wednesday morning. These schools had been closed for two days following last weekend’s ice storm, which caused widespread damage across Warren County.
The Vicksburg Warren School District (VWSD), however, announced that its schools will remain closed on Wednesday. The decision is primarily due to ongoing power outages and transportation concerns. As of Tuesday evening, Entergy Mississippi reported that more than 3,900 customers in Warren County were still without power.
The VWSD plans to resume a normal schedule for Thursday and Friday, pending no further changes in conditions. Temperatures are forecast to remain above freezing on those days, until another blast of frigid arctic air arrives Friday night and Saturday morning.
“The district continues to experience power outages across several school campuses, and many district employees are also without power in their homes,” the VWSD said in a statement released Tuesday evening. “While some schools have had power restored, numerous roadways across the district remain unsafe for travel, making normal transportation operations not possible at this time.”
In Louisiana, both Tallulah Academy and Briarfield Academy in Lake Providence announced they will remain closed on Wednesday. The Madison Parish School District will not reopen its public schools until Monday, Feb. 2. However, classes will be held online for the remainder of this week.
Entergy Louisiana reported that as of 7 p.m. Tuesday, 1,919 customers in Madison Parish and 2,810 in East Carroll Parish were still without power.
