As Shawano County officials continue to hammer out a new job description for an administrative coordinator, one supervisor offered a fresh suggestion as the county board meeting came to a close on December 17.
Supervisor Joe Miller acknowledged that the committee is leaning toward having the new coordinator serve primarily as a liaison among department heads, elected officials, and county committees. Under this model, department heads would report to their respective committees rather than to the administrative coordinator, which differs from the previous arrangement.
“Whoever this person is going to be is a dog without teeth, all bark and no bite,” Miller said. “This person needs to have some authority.”
He proposed a three-pronged approach to county leadership. “Finance, human resources, and whoever the next county coordinator is—those three individuals basically in charge of this entire government—those three could be on a parallel level,” Miller explained. “Instead of everything going to one person, I think you have a little more balanced approach on that.”
Meanwhile, members of the county’s executive committee continue to work with Julie Hasser, interim administrative coordinator and human resources director, to revamp the job description. Notably, all financial and human resources duties previously included in the coordinator’s role will be removed and handled instead by the finance and human resources departments. In some instances, those departments had already been performing those tasks.
