First destroys Beverly Hills garage

Fire destroyed an attached garage and damaged a home near 14 Mile and Lahser area, according to Beverly Hills Public Safety Director Ed Arnold. Firefighters were summoned at 4: 30 p. m. Sunday to the 32000 block of Bellvine Trail and found the fire encroaching on the home, he said. An adult and two children inside had escaped. Firefighters rescued the family cat, which was treated by an emergency vet for smoke inhalation. No firefighters were injured and the cat is recovering, he said. The fire was out by 5: 15 but firefighters remained on the scene until after 7 p. m. to deal with any hot spots, Arnold said. The garage is a complete loss, he said, adding that there’s significant smoke and water damage to the home. Beverly Hills investigators, working with the South Oakland Fire Investigation Team, believe an electrical issue caused the fire, which remains under investigation. The garage did not have smoke detectors, but the home did, he said, adding that it’s important to have smoke detectors in every area of a home and garage. Firefighters from Bloomfield Township, Bloomfield Hills, Berkeley, Oak Park and Huntington Wood provided mutual aid, Arnold said.
