Refugio readies for area postseason matchup with Rosebud-Lott

FIGHT! In the early part of the fourth quarter, tempers flared on the Weimar sidelines after a late Refugio tackle on a Weimar runner out of bounds. Numerous penalties and several players were ejected from the game at Victoria's Memorial Stadium Friday night.

The 2A D1 No. 1 ranked Refugio Bobcats (10-0, 6-0) finished their undefeated regular season with an average margin of victory of 51. 4 points per contest. It was quite a different story in Refugio’s opening round playoff game last week against Weimar. The Bobcats were shut out in the first quarter and took a slight 7-3 lead by the half. After a slow start, Refugio was able to gain control of the game and wound up with a 35-23 win in Victoria. Bobcats head coach Drew Cox said Weimar’s style of play was something his club had not experienced since their final non-district game against Edna on Sept. 12. The Bobcats came away with a 48-21 victory in that contest. “I’d say it was an abrupt change from the type of play we saw in our district schedule. It was definitely a wakeup call, for sure. It basically took us a whole half to get acclimated to,” coach Cox said. “They were very big, physical, and strong. We knew going into it that it was going to be tough.” The health of Refugio starting quarterback Ray Lewis is also in question this week. He exited the third quarter of last week’s game and did not return. Coach Cox declined to comment about Lewis’ status leading into Friday’s contest against Rosebud-Lott. Junior backup quarterback Matthew Perez completed 4-of-7 passes for 32 yards and ran twice for two yards in Lewis’ absence. Coach Cox is very confident in Perez’s abilities. This season, Perez has logged two starts at quarterback and has thrown eight touchdowns without an interception. “I thought Matt did a great job executing our offense when he got in there,” coach Cox said. “He comes in and plays well whenever he’s called upon. He is a good decision maker with the football and can run it, too.” The Refugio coach also addressed a fight that broke out between both teams along the Weimar sidelines during the fourth quarter of last week’s game. Refugio senior receiver and safety Mikel Brown will not be eligible to play in the first half of this week’s game for his role in the incident. “Things can get testy when you have two teams playing in an elimination game, but we preach to our kids not to get involved in stuff like that. We’ve got to do a better job of controlling our emotions,” coach Cox said. Refugio will be at Comal Cougar Stadium in New Braunfels Friday to take on a Rosebud-Lott Cougars team with a 9-2 overall record. Rosebud-Lott finished second in District 13 during the regular season and defeated San Saba 31-7 in last week’s bi-district round. The Cougars have collected 2, 669 rushing yards and 29 rushing scores as a team this season. They are led by sophomore halfback Zaylon Wells who has totaled 1, 213 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground. Junior quarterback Pryce Rabroker has thrown for 1, 451 yards and thrown 20 touchdowns with only two interceptions. “They run more of a spread offense, and their run-to-pass ratio is pretty similar to ours,” coach Cox said. “It’s going to come down to focus, execution, and just plain getting it done.”.
