Mizzou wrestling finishes eighth at National Duals after battling through five duals

TULSA, Ok. Missouri wrapped up a competitive weekend at the National Duals Invitational sponsored by Paycom, finishing eighth with wins over Little Rock and Michigan, along with narrow losses to Minnesota and Illinois. The Tigers also earned $20,000 in prize money as multiple wrestlers delivered standout performances. Round 1 vs. No. 3 Iowa 34-3 Loss Missouri opened against a powerhouse in Iowa and struggled early. At 125 lbs, No. 28 Mack Mauger fell 2-0 to Leo DeLuca. In the 133-lb matchup, No. 2 Drake Ayala pinned No. 20 Kade Moore, putting Iowa ahead 9-0. No. 9 Nasir Bailey followed with a 2-0 win over No. 19 Zeke Seltzer. At 149 lbs, No. 6 Josh Edmond suffered a surprising 2-1 upset to Ryder Block, extending Iowa’s lead to 15-0. Freshman Seth Mendoza dropped an 8-1 decision to No. 11 Jordan Williams at 157, and at 165 lbs, No. 2 Michael Caliendo beat No. 13 Max Mayfield by major decision, making it 22-0. Mauger dropped a 2-1 match at 125 lbs before Moore tied things with a 6-0 win at 133 lbs. Seltzer fell 10-4 at 141 lbs, but Edmond evened it again at 149 lbs. Mendoza dropped a 6-4 decision at 157 lbs, and Mylin fell 9-3 at 165 lbs as Minnesota built a 12-6 lead. Steed won 4-3 at 174 lbs but was docked an unsportsmanlike point, leaving Missouri down 12-8. Sinclair and Bates delivered consecutive wins to give Missouri a 14-12 lead, but Stoner fell 4-0 at 285 lbs, giving Minnesota the 15-14 win. Seventh-Place Dual vs. No. 15 Illinois 26-18 Loss Missouri fell to Illinois despite a late push in the weekend finale. Illinois jumped ahead 9-0 with decision wins over Mauger and Moore. Seltzer earned a 4-0 win at 141 lbs, but Missouri dropped three straight bouts at 149, 157 and 165 lbs. At 149 lbs, Easton Hilton pushed Will Baysingar to triple overtime. Illinois led 20-3 entering the 174 lbs match, where Steed exited with an injury forfeit, extending the deficit to 26-3. He was helped off the mat with no update provided. Missouri closed strong: Sinclair won 7-3 at 184 lbs, Bates received a medical forfeit at 197 lbs and Illinois gave a voluntary forfeit at heavyweight to finalize the 26-18 score. Missouri finished eighth overall and now looks ahead to a Nov. 24 rematch with Illinois at the Hearnes Center.
