Facebook (META) chief AI scientist Yann LeCun leaves company to open new AMI start-up

Yann LeCun, Meta (formerly known as Facebook) chief AI scientist and well-known visionary of the technology, is leaving the company. LeCun started work at Facebook in 2013 at its Director of AI Research, but he is closing this chapter of his career with plans to create a new start-up company in the near future. There, LeCun hopes to focus his efforts on development of Advanced Machine Learning (AMI) versus the Large Language Model (LLM) trend that currently dominates research and development in the industry. LeCun announced his exit from Meta on his LinkedIn profile, where he thanked the company for his time and also announced his next plans. LeCun shared that he will remain until Meta until the end of 2025. He also claimed Meta will be a partner to his new company: LeCun has been a formative part of Meta’s AI industry and planning, with the company developing applications such as targeted marketing based on AI chatbot interactions. However, LeCun has also been critical of the LLMs trend that has dominated the industry, claiming that more focus should be given to AMI because it has more practical application in a world where LLMs still have limited understanding and purpose:.
