The feature offers added convenience but does not replace the physical passport required for international travel. Apple has launched a new Digital ID system that lets U. S. passport holders store passport information in Apple Wallet and present it at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints for domestic flights. The feature, announced this week, marks the first time a U. S. passport can be used in a mobile wallet for identity verification at U. S. airports. According to Apple, the rollout supports travelers at select TSA lanes across more than 250 airports nationwide. The Digital ID serves as an optional tool for domestic security screening and does not replace the physical passport. How the Digital ID works Users can create a Digital ID by opening the Wallet app, tapping the add button, and selecting Digital ID. The process requires scanning the passport’s photo page and reading its embedded chip using near field communication. Travelers must then take a selfie and complete short head movements to verify identity. The feature is available on iPhone 11 and later models with iOS 26. 1 and on Apple Watch Series 6 and later with watchOS 26. 1. Apple confirms that the Digital ID pulls information from the passport’s chip but does not alter or replace the physical document. Where the Digital ID is accepted The Digital ID is currently valid only at designated TSA checkpoints that have digital identity readers. TSA states that the feature may be used for domestic screening but cannot be used for international travel, border inspections, or airline check-in outside TSA security. Travelers must still carry their physical passport on all international trips. The Digital ID cannot substitute for a passport book in immigration processing or airport counter verification. Security and privacy safeguards Apple states that Digital ID data is encrypted and stored only on the device rather than on Apple servers. Each use requires authentication through Face ID or Touch ID. Apple says it does not have access to information about where or when the Digital ID is presented. TSA notes that the program is voluntary and that passengers may continue presenting a physical ID at any checkpoint. A convenience feature, not a replacement The Digital ID gives travelers a secure, contactless option for identity verification during domestic travel. It appears alongside boarding passes and payment cards already stored in Apple Wallet, allowing travelers to consolidate travel essentials on one device. However, the limitations remain clear. The physical passport is still required for all international travel and for any interaction with immigration authorities or airline staff. TSA adoption varies by airport, and not all checkpoints currently support the feature.
