Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition is here with new “Mostly Negative” DLC on Steam and an update RPG fans say “breaks the game and adds nothing more”

The Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition has arrived just weeks after Bethesda Game Studios’ big Fallout Day stream, much to fans’ delight. However, the launch hasn’t gone exactly smoothly, as players report various crashes, buggy behavior, and broken mods in its wake.

For longtime Bethesda RPG fans, this unfortunate pattern is all too familiar. A new release drops, players dive in immediately, and then the issues begin.

The Anniversary Edition includes the full base game, all six official expansions, and more than 150 Creation Club items — making it seem like quite a deal. Unfortunately, it appears to be plagued by many of the same problems that affected the original Fallout 4 title (and, frankly, many Bethesda games) at launch.

According to the official Steam page, the “Creations Bundle” — essentially the extra content included with the Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition — currently holds a “Mostly Negative” rating. The reviews are both humorous and disheartening. One user quipped, “Much to Todd Howard’s claims, it did in fact not work.”

Elsewhere online, players share clips and posts illustrating the issues they’re experiencing. One user’s clip shows severely broken textures followed by a crash. Another joked on their forum thread, “Fallout 4 anniversary update bringing maximum nostalgia,” alongside a screenshot of a game crash.

The situation looks no better on Reddit, where fans complain that the new edition’s accompanying Fallout 4 update “breaks the game and adds nothing more than a UI update so that you can pay for mods.” A separate discussion echoes similar sentiments, with one commenter stating, “Breaking the game on its anniversary is peak Bethesda.” Others simply report, “My game will no longer launch.”

It’s an incredibly unfortunate launch. But as a hardened Bethesda RPG stan myself, it’s sadly not surprising.

Hopefully, the developers can address these issues quickly to provide a smoother anniversary experience — both with the update and the new paid content.

After all, Skyrim now boasts a genuinely fun Anniversary Edition, released a few years ago, featuring newer content and unique player creations that, in my opinion, add nicely to the base game experience. Here’s hoping Fallout 4’s Anniversary Edition can follow a similar path.
