Charges dropped against former Brockton choral director after alleged victim declines to testify

**Charges Dropped Against Former Brockton High School Choral Director in Sexual Misconduct Case**

Matthew Cunningham, the former choral director at Brockton High School, was arrested in August 2025 following a monthslong investigation by Brockton police and State Police. He faced serious charges, including one count of trafficking a person for sexual servitude and one count of sexual conduct for a fee, related to allegations involving an underage boy.

According to prosecutors, Cunningham allegedly met the minor on April 27, 2025, performed a sexual act on him, and later paid him through an app. The transaction was flagged by app administrators due to the involved parties being an adult and a minor. They subsequently contacted the FBI, which coordinated with Brockton police to investigate the case. Authorities say Cunningham initially connected with the student through the dating app Grindr and solicited paid sexual acts.

Cunningham pleaded not guilty to both charges and was held on $25,000 bail. His defense attorney maintained that Cunningham was unaware that the alleged victim was underage or a student at Brockton High School.

Once Brockton Public Schools learned of Cunningham’s arrest, the district placed him on paid administrative leave. A spokesperson confirmed on Thursday that Cunningham is no longer employed by the school district.

On November 6, 2025, prosecutors dropped the trafficking charge at the Commonwealth’s request. The remaining charge was dismissed shortly after because the alleged victim invoked the Fifth Amendment, leading to a lack of prosecution.

Cunningham had served as the choral director at Brockton High for more than a decade. In addition to directing the choir, he taught piano, participated in musical productions, and worked as a guest conductor in other venues.

Joseph Krowski Jr., Cunningham’s attorney, did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Thursday evening.
