Nick Saban, Urban Meyer Named ‘Slam-Dunk’ Candidates for Elite Coaching Job

On Wednesday, Dec. 10, the Michigan Wolverines announced the termination of University of Michigan head football coach Sherrone Moore.

“U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately,” Michigan said in an official statement. The university also announced that Biff Poggi has been appointed as the interim head football coach, effective immediately.

The timing of Moore’s firing is particularly challenging. It comes during a critical period in college football, when recruiting efforts and program stability are paramount. With the sudden departure of a longstanding leader, the Wolverines face uncertainty as they work to secure top-tier recruits. This makes it all the more urgent for Michigan to solidify their head coaching situation as quickly as possible.

Ideally, the Wolverines should look to hire a head coach with extensive college football experience—someone who can seamlessly step in without a steep learning curve—given the prestige and expectations of one of the nation’s strongest football programs.

This is where retired college football heavyweights Nick Saban and Urban Meyer come into the conversation. In a feature published just hours after Moore’s dismissal, Trent Knoop of Sports Illustrated outlined potential replacement options, naming both Saban and Meyer as ideal candidates.

“Love them or hate them—either would be a slam-dunk hire for Michigan,” Knoop writes. “Urban Meyer and Nick Saban’s pedigree speaks for itself and both are considered two of the best to ever coach in college. It would be a shame not to at least pick up the phone and call both to gauge interest in the job.”

While Knoop suggests that Saban might be more open to considering the role than Meyer, he also acknowledges that “both are likely going to turn the job down.”

Knoop stresses that Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel “has to at least pick up the phone and make the call. Not only would players stay to play under them, but either coach would get Michigan back into the College Football Playoff in no time.”

This notion of bringing in Saban or Meyer underscores the need for experience and stability. Both coaches possess the leadership and expertise necessary to return Michigan to championship contention, reminiscent of the success they enjoyed in their final season under Jim Harbaugh.
