‘Idiots’: Trump officials roasted for holding ‘ego contest’ in airport

Two of President Donald Trump’s cabinet secretaries faced criticism from political analysts and observers after an unusual event at Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C.

On Monday, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced a new initiative called the “Make Travel Family Friendly Again” campaign. The initiative allocates $1 billion toward upgrading airport facilities to include nursing rooms, workout stations, and healthier food options, aiming to improve the travel experience for families.

Following the announcement, Kennedy and Duffy engaged in a pull-up contest near the airport’s security line. Kennedy completed 20 pull-ups, while Duffy managed 10. This impromptu competition drew immediate backlash on social media.

“How much of my money did these two idiots spend today on this nonsense?” asked Joseph Mastrosimone, a law professor at Washburn University, on X (formerly Twitter). “Do you think that closing off part of a busy airport for a pull-up contest is what taxpayers are paying you to do on their dime?”

Laura Miller, communications director for the AFL-CIO, weighed in as well, expressing skepticism about the event. Former national security official Brian McKeon commented, “I’d be happy to have them do this 24/7 if they’d let normal people run their departments.”

CNN producer DJ Judd added, “If there’s one thing the airport experience needs, it’s ego contests from Cabinet Secretaries outside of security!”

The event has sparked debate over the appropriateness of such displays by high-ranking officials during official engagements.
