South Phoenix crash leaves 2 dead, 1 hospitalized with signs of impairment

PHOENIX Two people were left dead after a car crashed into them at a high speed early Saturday morning in south Phoenix, according to authorities. A two-man patrol unit of the Phoenix Police Department responded around 1: 35 a. m. to “a large fire” near the intersection of Baseline Road and Central Avenue. The unit, while parked in a neighborhood near the intersection, had seen a car driving “north at a high rate of speed” just prior to the flames becoming visible. Upon arrival, the police found two vehicles had crashed into the Valley Metro light rail platform at Baseline/Central Ave. Phoenix police were able to extinguish the fire, but both individuals who had been struck by the oncoming vehicle were pronounced dead on the scene. The driver who caused the accident was removed from their car and taken to a nearby hospital with “life-threatening injuries,” police said. His current condition was not provided. Once detectives took over the scene, they learned the high-speeding driver ran through a red light before crashing into the other vehicle the was heading west on a green light. The high-speeding driver showed signs of impairment when assessed by police. No other information was provided in this ongoing investigation.
