Veteran character actor Adam Goldberg has found his way into some significant big-screen moments over the past 30 years. His credits include modern Hollywood classics like Zodiac, Dazed And Confused and the Oscar-winning Saving Private Ryan and A Beautiful Mind. Meanwhile, his side gig as a self-styled indie-rock mystery man has received decidedly less attention-but perhaps that’s by design. For almost 15 years, he’s been operating under the curious auspices of the Goldberg Sisters, a name he devised to remedy the “marketplace confusion” caused by his first nom de band, LANDy. “I thought I’d clarify things by rechristening my music in honor of my fictional twin sister-the brains of the operation,” he says. Hobby, labor of love, vanity project . however you want to spin it, Goldberg obviously has a passion for the craft of songwriting. Listening to the sturdily constructed psych/pop of “Our Kind Of Love,” you might even think music was his only vocation. “While I’d always recorded demos and engineered some parts of my other records, this is the first song where, in addition to doing all the instrumentation, I recorded and mixed it from soup to nuts,” says Goldberg. Like many songs on the Goldberg Sisters’ upcoming LP, When The Ships Of My Dreams Return, “Our Kind Of Love” began with a drum machine. “Then I added other percussive elements before adding real drums-this is generally how I work,” says Goldberg. “But the deeper I got into the recording of the album, the more varied and textured the percussion and synth elements became.
