There are a lot of unwritten rules in hockey, and New York Rangers goalie Jonathan Quick thought the Detroit Red Wings violated one. That’s why Quick lost it and precipitated a major scrum at the end of the Red Wings’ 2-1 win against the Rangers on Sunday, Nov. 16.
The issue stemmed from Detroit’s Mason Appleton putting the puck into the Rangers’ empty net after the final buzzer had sounded. Quick, who had been pulled for an extra skater, came off the bench and confronted Appleton.
“The horn goes, a couple seconds, and he shoots at the net,” said Quick, who made 40 saves in the loss. “I don’t know why they were surprised. That’s usually the response when something like that happens. Boys jumped in and did the right thing.”
The incident quickly escalated, with a lot of pushing and shoving, and some punches thrown. On-ice officials stepped in to defuse the situation, pushing Quick to the side and keeping Red Wings goalie Cam Talbot away from the fray.
In the aftermath, the only penalties called were unsportsmanlike conduct against Quick and a 10-minute misconduct each against Quick and Appleton.
