“Jaws would hit the floor”: Josh Pate hints Lane Kiffin and other CFB giants are quietly eyeing the NFL

CFB analyst Josh Pate believes that Lane Kiffin and several other collegiate coaches are seriously considering opportunities in the NFL.

On Wednesday’s episode of “The Colin Cowherd Show,” Pate was asked if Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin might be interested in leaving Oxford for a chance to coach at the professional level.

“Yeah, I think he is,” Pate responded, as reported by On3. “I think several of them are. There are some names considering the NFL that would totally and completely put jaws on the ground if those names ever got public. These guys are always thinking about the NFL.”

He added, “Now, you’d never get the truth out of most of them, but yeah. Look, you know the kind of mentality it takes to succeed at the highest level of college football, especially if you specialize on a side of the ball. It goes hand in hand with the mentality that says, ‘I could win in the NFL, I would win on Sundays. I want to test myself against the best. I want to see how my offense does.’” (Timestamp 29:00-35:00)

Since the New York Giants fired Brian Daboll following a disappointing 2-8 start to the season, rumors have been swirling about Lane Kiffin possibly being the next head coach. Last month, analyst Joel Klatt named Kiffin as one of his top five candidates to take over the Giants and lead them to success.

This season, Kiffin has guided the Ole Miss Rebels to a strong 9-1 record after their recent win over the Citadel Bulldogs. The team is well-positioned to compete for a spot in the upcoming 12-team College Football Playoffs.

### Joel Klatt on Lane Kiffin’s Future and Potential Offers

On his show, Joel Klatt discussed how Lane Kiffin is on track to receive a significant contract extension after the season concludes. He believes Ole Miss will do everything possible to retain their coach in Oxford.

Klatt also mentioned that the LSU Tigers could attempt to lure Kiffin away. LSU fired Brian Kelly last month after four seasons and a 34-14 record.

“I think the biggest threat to Ole Miss down the stretch is distraction,” Klatt said. “And that distraction is in the form of their future head coach. I don’t know where Lane Kiffin will end up. I know that Ole Miss is basically telling him, ‘Hey, it’s a blank check. You tell us what you need to stay here, and we will do it.'”

He continued, “I also have, on pretty good authority, that LSU is prepared to do the same thing for Lane Kiffin.”

### Looking Ahead

Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels are next scheduled to face the Florida Gators on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET. Fans will be keenly watching both the game and Kiffin’s potential next career move.
