Michelle Monaghan (True Detective, The White Lotus) has been set to star in a new hockey drama series from Netflix and Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps under their overall deal. The 8-episode untitled project comes from creator Nick Naveda (Words on Bathroom Walls, My Lovely Wife in the Psych Ward), who executive produces alongside showrunner Bridget Bedard (Love Life, Ramy). Trey Edward Shults (Waves, It Comes at Night) is set to direct the first two episodes.
The series is set in the small working-class town of South Dorothy, Minnesota, where the high school hockey team has a long history of producing out-of-state championships and NHL stars under the leadership of their legendary Coach “Sully” Sullivan.
Tragedy strikes when a bus crash claims the lives of several players and Coach Sully himself. In the wake of this devastating loss, the town turns to Harper Sullivan (Monaghan), Coach Sully’s widow, to coach a new team of battered and broken young men.
What unfolds is a hopeful and unforgettable story of an underdog team coming together to galvanize their town, reclaim their way of life, and transform their shared grief into an unstoppable superpower.

This hockey series marks Netflix’s latest collaboration with 21 Laps, following successful projects such as Stranger Things; All the Light We Cannot See, based on the New York Times best-selling novel by Anthony Doerr; The Perfect Couple, adapted from the New York Times bestseller by Elin Hilderbrand; and The Adam Project.

Executive producers on the project include Shawn Levy (Stranger Things, The Perfect Couple), Dan Levine (Arrival, All the Light We Cannot See), and Robert Atwood (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters) for 21 Laps, with Moera Ainai (The Perfect Couple) serving as producer.
