Congress voted Wednesday evening to end the longest federal government shutdown in the nation’s history after 43 days.
The House of Representatives approved a spending package that will fund the USDA, Department of Veterans Affairs, and other institutions through the 2026 fiscal year. This includes funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which administers food benefits to millions of Americans.
In a statement Wednesday night, U.S. Rep. Nathaniel Moran (R-Tyler) blamed Senate Democrats for blocking Republicans’ resolution to reopen the government.
“After more than forty days of unnecessary hardship, a handful of Senate Democrats finally accepted a commonsense proposal and joined Republicans to end the government shutdown,” Moran said. “This resolution keeps spending at or below current levels for the three appropriation bills included and provides ample time to finalize and pass the remaining nine appropriations bills before January 30.
“This shutdown was avoidable from day one but unfortunately the Senate and House Democrats chose to hold the American people hostage only for purposes of political gamesmanship.”
The deal includes full-year appropriations bills for agriculture, military construction, veterans affairs, and the legislative branch. According to Moran’s office, this marks the first time since FY 2019 that regular appropriations bills were advanced through conference.
Funding for SNAP and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is fully secured through September 30, 2026. Other government funding is extended through January 30, 2026.
Moran also noted that the agreement contains “a safeguard against future Democrat-led omnibus packages, preventing bloated, last-minute mega-spending bills before Christmas.”
However, the future of Affordable Care Act tax credits remains uncertain. Democrats had sought to extend these tax credits before agreeing to reopen the government. While the shutdown deal did not guarantee an extension, a group of eight Senate Democrats reached an agreement with Republicans to end the shutdown in exchange for a vote in the coming weeks on the subsidies.
