Enhance has been making games for many years, but the team truly cemented its place on the gaming map with its unique blend of puzzle gameplay and stirring musical accompaniment. Tetris Effect remains a generation-defining reinvention of a classic franchise. Riding high on that success, Enhance has now given the same treatment to Lumines with their latest release, Lumines Arise.

### Make the Beat Drop

Lumines Arise follows the series’ well-loved formula: creating 2×2 squares of the same pattern and keeping as much of the board clear as possible. Like the best puzzle games, the speed and intensity ramp up as you progress.

The game’s main mode, Journey Mode, features five different sections where players need to reach a target number of squares to advance. It starts off easy, but by the fourth or fifth section, the available space shrinks significantly, upping the challenge.

### A Visual and Musical Feast

While the puzzle mechanics alone are a winner, Lumines Arise truly shines by wrapping that formula in a breathtakingly beautiful visual package—following in the footsteps of Tetris Effect. The immersive backgrounds range from remote beaches and snowy cabins to tropical rainforests with head-bopping chameleons and neon-lit cityscapes. Each stage pulses and moves perfectly in time with the beat, making it easy to get lost in the rhythm—sometimes to the point where your eyes stray from the gameplay.

Even on Easy difficulty, Journey Mode can be challenging, especially for players unfamiliar with the Lumines style who might assume making squares is a simple task.

### Visual Intensity and Accessibility Options

That said, some stages like Mirror Ball or Digital Human lean heavily into dazzling visual effects. While these look fantastic, at times they can become a bit distracting. If you’re like me and appreciate dazzling effects—but prefer them toned down—you’ll be glad to know that Enhance has packed Lumines Arise with a robust suite of accessibility options.

These options allow you to reduce visual intensity, essential for managing the game’s VR mode and for players who might find the default sensory experience a bit overwhelming. Accessibility settings also include gameplay modifiers, such as automatic block dropping and a No Fail mode, alongside various difficulty settings that influence game speed.

Additionally, camera distance options help to curb the intensity of the playing field’s effects. There are even specific toggles to switch off spiders and snakes—ideal for players with those particular phobias.

Despite these features, the game responsibly displays a photosensitivity warning on startup, giving players a heads-up about the vibrant and dynamic visuals they’re about to experience.

Outside of Journey Mode, Lumines Arise offers a variety of other ways to enjoy the game:

– **Missions** present specific challenges, from clearing a set number of squares within a limited number of moves to more creative objectives. Some missions introduce falling towers or Tetris-shaped pieces—a fun nod to Enhance’s previous puzzle hit.

– **Multiplayer** includes a few modes to compete against others. The primary competitive mode, Burst Battle, challenges players to clear squares efficiently while sending garbage blocks to their opponent. Players also get to choose their preferred background and music tracks, adding a personal touch to battles.

– The **Leaderboard League** offers Time Attack challenges and a mode called Dig Down, which tasks players with keeping pace as blocks rise from below.

While these additional modes are entertaining, the selection is somewhat limited, which means they might lose their charm over time.

One feature that stands out is how Lumines Arise fosters a communal gaming experience. Weekend events encourage the entire player base to jump in and contribute by playing any multiplayer mode they like. Each game played helps achieve a global goal—such as gathering Light to build a massive Vision construct.

Players who participate earn rewards that allow them to customize their Pon avatar, adding a fun sense of progression and personalization.

The multiplayer hub, main menu, and even the end of Journey Mode burst with life as NPC Pon avatars of players who have logged in appear, dancing along to the game’s festive soundtrack. It’s a lively, shared experience that extends beyond simply playing the puzzles.

### The Soundtrack: Lumines Arise’s Defining Feature

At its core, Lumines Arise is a musical journey. The soundtrack, composed by Hydelic, spans a wide variety of genres—techno, house, rap, and even LoFi beats. The music syncs beautifully with the game’s moving Timeline which erases completed squares, as well as the constantly shifting backgrounds.

Players aren’t required to play strictly to the beat; instead, the beat plays with them. When the background song picks up the pace, so does the Timeline, creating an engaging, toe-tapping challenge that enhances the gameplay flow.

Just like Tetris Effect before it, Lumines Arise is as much a musical experience as it is a puzzle game. The series wouldn’t work as well without a lineup of standout tracks, and this installment delivers them in spades—resulting in an entertaining Journey Mode and lively multiplayer sessions.

Enhance also includes a Playlist mode, allowing players to arrange songs and their paired backgrounds to their liking—a feature I especially appreciate.

Though I am personally more of a Tetris fanatic and not traditionally drawn to the Lumines series, I can confidently say that Lumines Arise is an absolute triumph. Its visuals are some of Enhance’s best work, combining the power of Unity with their proprietary Synaesthesia Engine.

The game strikes a fine balance between fun, unexpected challenge, and relaxation. Above all, Lumines Arise invites you to sit back, mellow out, and let the beat drop.
