A Chicago police source confirmed that at least three victims were shot during an incident at a location housing a Jewel-Osco store in the Douglas neighborhood on the South Side. The shooting occurred late Tuesday morning in the 400 block of East 34th Street.
Nearby residents reported hearing numerous squad cars and ambulances responding to the scene. Some witnesses also saw at least one victim being taken out of the Jewel-Osco by ambulance.
According to Chicago police, two individuals entered the Jewel store and took merchandise that was on display. When they attempted to leave, a 46-year-old security guard intervened.
One of the robbers opened fire on the security guard, striking him as well as two other people inside the store. The guard sustained wounds to his body and was transported in serious condition to UChicago Medicine.
A 29-year-old woman was shot in the left foot and was taken to the same hospital in good condition. A third woman suffered a graze wound to her foot but refused medical treatment at the scene.
No arrests had been made at the time, and detectives were actively investigating the incident.
