After the Cleveland Browns lost to one of the NFL’s worst teams, the New York Jets, 27-20 in Week 10, much of the spotlight has turned to the team’s plans for rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel.
Gabriel wasn’t terrible against the Jets, but he made some critical mistakes at key moments. He finished the game completing 17 of 32 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Over the past few years, it has become clear that the Browns have struggled to find a reliable quarterback—a problem the organization will eventually have to address.
With rookie Shedeur Sanders reportedly ready to start, many fans and analysts view him as the potential player who can turn things around for the Browns. However, after the Jets loss, head coach Kevin Stefanski stated that he intends to stick with Gabriel and emphasized that Dillon simply needs to keep improving.
When asked about possibly starting Sanders on Monday, Stefanski’s response was non-committal. He avoided speculating on any quarterback changes and reiterated his commitment to improving the offense as a whole. “I don’t think it’s fair to speculate. We are committed to getting better as an offense. Dillon is committed to improving in any which way he can,” Stefanski told reporters. “All of our players, young players, are developing and working behind the scenes to make sure they are better on a daily basis.”
It’s important to remember there’s a lot that goes on during practice that fans don’t see. It’s possible Sanders is struggling in practice and isn’t yet ready to start. However, considering Gabriel’s struggles in his rookie season and the Browns’ current position far from a playoff berth, it could be worth giving another player a chance on the field.
Shedeur Sanders is the logical next in line, and it will be interesting to see how this quarterback situation develops moving forward.
