Square Enix has confirmed upcoming layoffs and closures as it prepares to restructure its US and other Western businesses once again. While rumors about layoffs in Western offices had been circulating, the company recently confirmed these plans in a financial presentation.
The presentation, posted this week on Square Enix’s investor relations website, revealed the decision to reduce its presence overseas and re-prioritize resources back to its core operations in Japan.
Western operations for Square Enix have been declining for quite some time. In 2022, the company sold off many of its Western studios, including Crystal Dynamics, Eidos, and Square Enix Montreal. Additionally, Square Enix has had to adjust its strategy before, shifting from exclusive titles to multiplatform releases following slow early sales of *Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth*.
This latest move highlights the company’s focus on strengthening its home market while streamlining its Western business to adapt to changing market conditions.
