Paul Merson predicts Manchester City vs Liverpool and other Premier League GW11 fixtures

**Premier League Gameweek 11 Predictions**

Liverpool seem to have turned things around, haven’t they? They secured a good away win in the Premier League against Aston Villa and followed it up with another victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League. But it’s another massive, massive game coming up for them this weekend. If Arsenal get the win at Sunderland on Saturday, anything less than three points at the Etihad would be a serious blow for Liverpool. The same goes for Manchester City. Both teams cannot afford to drop points if Arsenal maintain their winning run.

Except for the West Ham game, which was a shock result, I think I got all my predictions right in gameweek 10. If that continues, there will be a lot of surprises this time around as well. On that note, let’s dive straight into my predictions for Premier League gameweek 11.

### Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

We never really know what we’re going to get with Tottenham. Against Chelsea, they were bordering on atrocious! In that big local derby, everything they did was wrong. It was one of Spurs’ worst performances in a long time.

Manchester United, on the other hand, got a good result last week. Settling for a point at Nottingham Forest is definitely better than a loss. Chelsea could have easily won 4-0 or 5-0 against Tottenham last weekend, and United’s forwards are even more dangerous.

Regarding Micky van de Ven and Djed Spence refusing to acknowledge the fans and greet Thomas Frank after the loss to Chelsea—it’s understandable. Spurs have ambitions this season and it was a bad performance. Nobody expects a lap of honour after a defeat.

Manchester United have shown promise in attack over the last few weeks and I’m backing them to win since they’re more consistent than Spurs.

**Prediction:** Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Manchester United

### Everton vs Fulham

Big result for Fulham last week. That win really took the pressure off them, even though West Ham also won. As things stand, only four points separate Aston Villa in 11th and Fulham in 15th. A defeat to Everton would put significant distance between Fulham and the top half of the table.

Remember, Everton sit just one point above Fulham—there’s a lot riding on this match for both teams. Whoever wins can start to look up the table, while the loser may be dragged closer to the bottom three.

Everton have one win in their last eight games, which is worrying. That draw at home to West Ham has piled on the pressure. If they don’t win soon, confidence will quickly wane.

On a side note, any player not in the England squad during the international break in November will find it tough to make the World Cup squad next year, with Thomas Tuchel likely to set things in stone soon. Will Jack Grealish get the call-up?

Back to the match: Everton desperately need a win, and I expect them to get the job done against Fulham.

**Prediction:** Everton 2-1 Fulham

### West Ham United vs Burnley

How quickly football changes! West Ham beat Newcastle last weekend, and another win over Burnley here could get them out of the relegation zone. I’ve said it before: West Ham aren’t going down.

West Ham’s front line has so much quality; they just need to tighten up at the back. It was a poor performance from Newcastle, but credit to West Ham for that win.

Burnley and Leeds have both done well so far, but they’re still 17th and 16th—shows how tough life is as a newly-promoted side. Whoever loses this could get cut adrift.

This is like a cup final for West Ham. Even though they struggle for clean sheets, I’m backing them to win and keep Burnley out.

**Prediction:** West Ham United 2-0 Burnley

### Sunderland vs Arsenal

This is a difficult game for Arsenal. Sunderland had more shots and possession than Everton in their recent draw. Sunderland have been excellent so far and can make life difficult for their opponents.

I watched Arsenal against Burnley last weekend—they didn’t look like conceding at all. Arsenal are just in that good a form. The best way to face Arsenal? Perhaps a 5-4-1 setup, keeping things tight and making them work for it.

Sunderland will need to defend in blocks of 15 minutes and keep the game tight. If Arsenal don’t score early, the pressure mounts. But if Arsenal net the first goal, it’s over for Sunderland.

This fixture is also a reunion for Granit Xhaka, who has been excellent since joining Arsenal. But Bertrand Traore and Noah Sadiki also deserve credit in midfield; Regis Le Bris has built the team smartly. Sadiki’s presence really allows Xhaka to shine.

**Prediction:** Sunderland 0-2 Arsenal

### Chelsea vs Wolves

I still can’t believe Chelsea didn’t win 4-0 or 5-0 against Tottenham last weekend! They dominated that game. Then, their trip to Qarabag saw some questionable squad decisions—either play your strongest XI or rest everyone, but not an indecisive mix.

Chelsea are fighting for Champions League relevance, and possibly a top 8 finish. Wolves are next, not Arsenal, so why all the chopping and changing? Now, after a draw with Qarabag, Chelsea are under more pressure.

With fixtures against Barcelona and Napoli coming up in the Champions League, Chelsea need to focus and make smart lineup decisions. That said, I still expect them to beat Wolves. Wolves are trying to stay up and should ideally have a new manager in place before this game, but that’s not the case.

**Prediction:** Chelsea 3-0 Wolves

### Crystal Palace vs Brighton & Hove Albion

Crystal Palace have bounced back after a tough period, recording three straight wins in all competitions. I don’t think there will be much to separate Palace and Brighton in the standings by the end of the season.

Both teams might want to focus on cup competitions. Palace have the quality to do well in Europe this year, maybe even win the Europa Conference League, though that could come at the expense of some league results.

Brighton have lost their last two away games, and I see that trend continuing.

**Prediction:** Crystal Palace 2-1 Brighton & Hove Albion

### Aston Villa vs Bournemouth

What a game this promises to be! Bournemouth are fifth, Aston Villa are 11th, but only three points separate them. Bournemouth always play a high line, which makes their games exciting and high-scoring. We saw that in their loss against Manchester City.

If Bournemouth continue to play this way, especially on the road, they need to be precise with their final ball—which wasn’t the case against City. I expect another entertaining, high-scoring game, but Villa to edge it.

**Prediction:** Aston Villa 3-2 Bournemouth

### Brentford vs Newcastle United

It was a disappointing result for Newcastle against West Ham last week—they had possession but didn’t create many clear chances. Brentford away is one of the toughest fixtures in the league.

All the big names—Aston Villa, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, and Liverpool—have struggled at Brentford, with only City winning there. Newcastle’s away form is poor and I’m backing Brentford to win.

**Prediction:** Brentford 2-1 Newcastle United

### Nottingham Forest vs Leeds United

This is a huge game. If Forest win, they’ll be just two points behind Leeds and one behind Burnley, which will really heat up the relegation battle.

Leeds have been poor away from home, except for their win against Wolves. With Sean Dyche in charge at Forest, we know they’ll stick to their strengths defensively. Dyche just started two games ago, so his job for now is simply to keep Forest up—expectations have shifted dramatically.

I’m confident Forest will win and drag everyone else back into a scrap at the bottom.

**Prediction:** Nottingham Forest 2-0 Leeds United

### Manchester City vs Liverpool

Before kickoff, Manchester City could be nine and Liverpool ten points behind Arsenal. If Liverpool finish the weekend that far back, their title hopes are effectively over.

City are in great form at the Etihad, winning five straight. Liverpool, in contrast, have lost four of their last five away league matches. On form alone, you’d pick City—but I think it will play out differently.

Virgil van Dijk will likely get the better of Erling Haaland, and if Conor Bradley can handle Vinicius Jr., he should be fine against City’s wingers.

Liverpool’s attack will pose big problems for City’s defense, which has shown vulnerability, even in their win over Bournemouth. This is Liverpool’s biggest game of the season—their title hopes depend on it.

If you pay £115 million for a player, you must play him in your biggest matches—Florian Wirtz should start for Liverpool, especially after his showing against Real Madrid. With a midfield of Gravenberch, Mac Allister, and Szoboszlai, I’m tipping Liverpool to pull off a huge win.

**Prediction:** Manchester City 1-3 Liverpool
