Liverpool in contention for ENORMOUS £50m agreement

Liverpool have made some extraordinary transfers over the years, and last summer blew most of the club’s previous records out of the water. Yet, we may have even more expensive feats to come. The direction of football finance over the last few decades has only gone one way — up. While inflation plays a role, the main factor is the evolution of transfer valuations.

It’s now conceivable that acquiring a highly-regarded young player could cost upwards of £100 million. Talent such as Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton or Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson may soon command such fees. This figure is mind-boggling but fits with the current market trend. World-class stars like Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak fall into this bracket too, and while their high costs remain huge gambles, there seems to be more certainty behind these moves.

The notion of Liverpool spending £100 million on another star in the near future may feel far-fetched, but these possibilities can no longer be ruled out. Reports suggest the Reds remain keen to chase big-name signings.

### Liverpool Linked with Ludicrous £50m Deal for Vinicius Jr

Anfield Watch reported last week that Vinicius Jr is on Liverpool’s radar following his recent falling out with Xabi Alonso at Real Madrid. The 25-year-old Brazilian has opened the door to a potential departure. According to Graeme Bailey, the Reds “shouldn’t be ruled out” for a move, although contract “issues” were highlighted.

Finance expert Stefan Borson offered further insight on the matter during a conversation with Football Insider. He explained:

> “Is there a scenario where the teams [Man City, Man Utd, and Liverpool] could construct a contract that competed with the contracts at Real Madrid? The answer would be yes for the usual suspects. But I think it’s just extremely unlikely, just because of the scale of that sort of deal.”

In other words, a move is not off the table, but the main challenges revolve around finances. Vinicius Jr is a world-class winger who will naturally have very high salary expectations.

### The Financial Reality Behind a Vinicius Jr Transfer

While the exact transfer fee required to pry Vinicius away from Real Madrid has not been officially confirmed, a £100 million figure is likely, considering recent sales of comparable talents. When this fee is amortised (spread) over the contract duration, the yearly cost becomes a substantial financial commitment.

Borson continued:

> “This sort of deal is one that kind of puts you offside if you’re a Premier League club, because on its own it can be worth £50 million a year, maybe more. No club can easily deal with £50 million a year of additional salary cost. Then on top of that, there’s the amortisation depending on what the transfer fee is. So, I think theoretically yes, but in practice probably no.”

In many cases, this financial reality might shut the door on Liverpool’s interest. However, Mohamed Salah’s current contract situation could leave some room for speculation.

### Salah’s Contract and Liverpool’s Financial Flexibility

Salah is under contract until 2027, earning about £400,000 per week. When broken down annually, that equates to approximately £20.8 million a year in salary, plus £5.2 million in bonuses — making his total outlay around £26 million per season.

Once Salah’s contract expires and that expense is off the books, Liverpool will gain notable financial breathing room. Although the Brazilian plays primarily on the left-wing — so Liverpool would still need to find another replacement when Salah eventually moves on — the focus on the pitch might shift.

It’s entirely plausible that Vinicius Jr could become the main man at Liverpool after Salah’s departure. While financially a deal for the galáctico might still be challenging, and Liverpool will have to carefully consider whether entering such a situation makes sense, it may be more possible than initially thought.
