No. 8 BYU beats Villanova 71-66 and spoils the debut of new Wildcats coach Kevin Willard

Freshman AJ Dybantsa announced his arrival in college basketball with an impressive performance, scoring 21 points and grabbing six rebounds as eighth-ranked BYU defeated Villanova 71-66 on Monday night. The victory came in the Hall of Fame Series and served as the season opener for both teams.

Dybantsa, considered one of the nation’s top freshmen, shot 9 for 18 from the floor in his collegiate debut, showcasing his scoring ability and poise on the court. Richie Saunders contributed 15 points and seven rebounds, while Robert Wright III added 14 points to help the Cougars secure the win.

The game also marked the regular-season debut of new Villanova coach Kevin Willard, but the Wildcats struggled, dealing with a rash of injuries leading up to the start of the season. Bryce Lindsay led Villanova with 22 points, and Christian Jeffrey chipped in 11 points. Duke Brennan finished with eight points and 15 rebounds for the Wildcats.

BYU’s strong team effort and standout freshman performance set the tone early for what promises to be an exciting season ahead.
