The EU’s Innovation Fund is set to invest €2.9 billion in 61 projects in its newest funding round aimed at deploying net-zero technologies.
These projects will focus on key areas including energy-intensive industries, renewable energy and energy storage, net-zero mobility and buildings, cleantech manufacturing, and industrial carbon management.
All selected initiatives align with the Clean Industrial Deal, the EU’s strategic blueprint for transforming its decarbonisation efforts into economic growth drivers. This deal was presented in February and emphasizes a streamlined approach to advancing green technology from innovation to market deployment.
Under the Clean Industrial Deal, the European Commission aims to foster a smoother pipeline that connects green technology innovation directly to real-world applications. This includes projects originally funded by the €93.5 billion Horizon Europe research programme.
However, it’s important to note that Horizon Europe and the Innovation Fund are not always a natural fit. While Horizon Europe projects often develop cutting-edge technologies, transitioning these innovations into scalable, market-ready solutions remains a challenge that the Innovation Fund seeks to address.
