Now Bar on One UI 8 gains support for a food delivery app

Samsung introduced the Now Bar feature with One UI 7.0 last year, enhancing the user experience by providing quick access to important information. With the release of One UI 8.0, the Now Bar gained support for Android 16’s Live Updates feature. Until recently, this functionality was exclusive to apps developed by Google and Samsung.

In an exciting development, the Indian food delivery app Zomato has rolled out a new update (version 19.2.4.1) that brings support for the Now Bar on One UI 8.0 (Android 16). As demonstrated in the screenshots below, Zomato now displays the estimated time of arrival (ETA) for orders in a compact, condensed form within the Now Bar.

When the Now Bar is accessed from the lock screen, users can tap it to reveal more detailed information — in this case, the message “Preparing your order.” On the status bar, the Now Bar appears as a pill-shaped UI element showing the app’s name alongside the ETA. Tapping this element expands it further to display comprehensive details related to the food delivery, including the ETA, order status, and the name of the restaurant.

Previously, Uber Eats was the sole food delivery app utilizing Android 16’s Live Updates APIs to provide live notifications through the Now Bar. With Zomato joining the list, it marks a growing adoption of this useful feature among third-party applications.

Looking ahead, we can expect wider support for the Now Bar and Live Updates from various categories of apps such as flight and travel apps, food and parcel delivery services, maps and navigation tools, and sports score trackers. This advancement promises to make real-time information more accessible and convenient for users across multiple domains.
