Dark Matter season 2 is coming: Here’s everything we know

Dark Matter Season 2: Everything We Know So Far

Dark Matter debuted last year as yet another strong sci-fi hit for Apple TV, and a second season is officially on the way. Here’s everything we know right now about Dark Matter season 2.

Brand New Story, With No Prior Source Material

Dark Matter season 1 was based entirely on the New York Times bestselling novel written by showrunner and author Blake Crouch. The first season covered the full story of that novel, which has no sequels. As a result, Apple’s season 2 pickup of Dark Matter came as a surprise.

But as Crouch put it, there is “so much more story to tell” with these characters. He explained, “In the process of writing and filming season one, we discovered that there’s so much more story to tell, and we’ve only scratched the surface of these characters as they fight for survival and to find their way home through a landscape of mind-bending realities. See you in the Box!”

Normally, a series continuing beyond the source material might be concerning. But with the original author in the driver’s seat, Dark Matter season 2 has fans excited rather than cautious.

Dark Matter’s Original Cast and Creative Team Are Back

The stars from the first season of Dark Matter will be returning for season 2, as the story continues to follow the Dessen family and related characters across the multiverse.

Most prominently, Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly reprise their roles as Jason Dessen and Daniela Vargas Dessen, respectively. Additionally, Chris Diamantopoulos joins the cast as a new addition, though his role is being kept under wraps.

Amanda Brugel will also be back, this time as a series regular, alongside Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, and Oakes Fegley.

Showrunner Blake Crouch will once again lead the creative team in season 2, continuing his role as writer, executive producer, and creator.

When to Expect Dark Matter Season 2 on Apple TV

Production on Dark Matter season 2 wrapped up in July, according to an update shared by showrunner Blake Crouch. He also mentioned that the series would immediately enter about six months of post-production work.

Based on this timeline, Dark Matter season 2 is expected to premiere around early 2026.

Apple TV has only recently started announcing its 2026 lineup. January is already looking quite packed, so a February or March debut seems like a safer bet. However, Apple could also opt to hold the new season for a later release.

For example, Dark Matter season 1 premiered in May 2024, so it’s possible season 2 might hit around May 2026. Any release later than that would be a surprise.
