France invites citizens to invest in defence tech

French public investment bank Bpifrance has launched a specialised defence fund and is calling on the general population to support efforts to increase defence spending and back innovative start-ups.

The newly introduced Bpifrance Défense fund, announced on October 14, aims to raise €450 million. Thanks to a €300 million seed investment from Bpifrance, the fund will begin investing immediately. This initial amount will be repaid as more investors sign up.

The fund focuses on investing tickets of up to €30 million in innovative dual-use technologies. It already includes a portfolio of around a dozen start-ups and scale-ups.

In addition, the Bpifrance Défense fund will support other funds managed by Bpifrance, such as Definvest, which primarily invests in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) involved in military equipment.
