The new prime minister of Japan, Sanae Takaichi, is the first female to hold such a position in that ancient society. She openly proclaims herself as far right and, for example, is against same-sex marriages.
However, the news that I could not wrap my mind around was the fact that her leadership of the Liberal Democratic Party is sinophobic (anti-China) and includes plans to effectively segregate the 1 million Chinese people living in Japan. Under her policies, Chinese residents might be prohibited from buying property, among a long list of other restrictions.
In addition, she is planning new espionage laws designed specifically to target the Chinese community.
Incredible as it might seem, all of this sinophobia closely mirrors the script of the movie *Farewell to Manzanar*, which depicted the U.S. government placing Japanese Americans in concentration camps during World War II some 80 years ago.
