UH Hilo men’s hoops team picked second

The Hawaii Hilo men’s basketball team was picked to finish tied for second in the PacWest Coaches Preseason Poll, released Friday. The Vulcans, coming off a 19-13 season, received 128 points, the same as Fresno Pacific. Point Loma was picked to win the 13-team conference with 168 points. Chaminade (124 points; 16-11 record) was picked fourth, and Hawaii Pacific (97 points; 15-14 record) was voted seventh.

HPU guard Joshua West, Hawaii Hilo guard Julio Montes II, and Chaminade guard Nathan Medina were named to the PacWest Preseason Watch Team.

Malu Garcia had 12 kills and Alohi Garcia added 11 as the Hawaii Hilo women’s volleyball team beat Concordia Irvine 25-17, 25-20, 27-25 on Friday at Vulcan Gymnasium. Emerson Reinke posted 31 assists and Isabella Hadaller contributed 11 kills, including the final two of the match, for the Vulcans (16-7, 5-2 PacWest). Caitlin Jarrell finished with 11 kills for the Eagles (9-9, 3-4).

On the other side, Abigail Nua finished with 25 kills and Saren Rogers added 16 as Point Loma defeated Hawaii Pacific 23-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-20 at St. Francis’ Shark Tank. Marley Sandoval had 12 kills and Peyton McBride contributed 11 for the Sharks (5-17, 0-6 PacWest). Sophia Baugh recorded 51 assists for the Sea Lions (17-2, 6-0).
