At one point, Aaron Rodgers was the most beloved Green Bay Packers star. The star quarterback led the franchise to a Super Bowl win and was easily their best player throughout the 2010s. However, since his departure in 2023, it seems Rodgers has lost some of his goodwill with his former fanbase.
Now playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Rodgers recently faced off against the Packers for the first time since being traded away. A longtime Packers fan shared some insight into the quarterback’s shifting popularity. In an ESPN article, Kyle Cousineau, a 45-year-old Green Bay resident, Packers season-ticket holder, and shareholder, cited Rodgers’ media presence as the biggest reason many Green Bay fans turned away from him in the latter part of his career.
“I think a lot of people grew tired of the bulls- with the [Pat] McAfee [Show] stuff and the different podcast appearances that he made, the darkness retreat and all that stuff,” Cousineau said. “He became so unrelatable to guys like me. Where Favre, and I also think a lot of it has to do with the eras, it was pre-social media.”
Towards the end of his career in Green Bay, Rodgers developed a reputation as somewhat of a diva. His last few offseasons were marked by drama, which didn’t sit well with many fans. Rodgers’ penchant for stirring up controversy during appearances on various shows while he was a free agent may have further soured his image. He was frequently on Pat McAfee’s radio show during his off days, often making unfiltered comments about the Packers and other topics.
Eventually, the Packers traded Rodgers to the New York Jets during the 2023 offseason. Unfortunately, he struggled to find his footing in New York, suffering an injury in his first game and facing challenges during the 2024 offseason.
This past offseason, Rodgers found a new home with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Since joining the Steelers, it appears he has revitalized his form and is showing signs of a resurgence. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see what the next chapter holds for the veteran quarterback.
